WELCOME TO OUR ONLINE TOUR
This is a brief summary of what you will find in the Irish National Heritage Park. One of Ireland's top tourist attractions.
More than any other country in Europe, Ireland is dotted with material reminders of its past, but few people, apart from specialists, can visualise what these were like in their original state. This is the purpose of the Irish National Heritage Park. This popular tourist attraction allows you see how people lived, worshipped and buried their dead, at different periods in history.
This has been accomplished by constructing full-scale reconstructions of the types of homesteads, places of ritual of worship, burial modes, and other, long forgotten, remains of a past stretching back around 9,000 years.
Each reconstruction in the park was carried out under the guidance of professional archaeologist.
The Park consists of diverse environmental settings including woodland, open fields, lakes, riverside and wet meadows. This has enabled each site to be located in its proper natural setting, exactly as it would have been originally. For example, the Middle Stone Age hut is surrounded by trees of willow, birch, hazel, and pine, typical of the Irish woodland following the Ice age.
By the time the first farmers had arrived, some 3,000 years later, other species such as oak, elm and ash had become established. This increase in species can be clearly seen at the Late Stone Age farmstead.
